This morning, Dasha showed up to say goodbye, do a short interview on the riots, watch our dance video, and give us Kiev cake. OMG it tasted like almond bits in merengue with a wafer texture. I didn't eat that much of it though, as we were being filmed on camera, and I was eating it with a spoon. Sad face. We had to bolt out of our apartment since a cab showed up to pick us up. On the way to the airport, a mob of rebels were checking passports "police checkpoint style" preventing people from going to the airport. Jonathan showed them his passport showing that we were Americans and Marcus got the whole thing on tape. Eeek, exciting and dramatic!
We had to wait around for a long time to check in, but we were just happy to be out of the apartment and on our way out of Ukraine. We were totally that group of people in the airport repacking shit to make everyone's stuff fit since Wizz Air (don't ever fly them) has a policy of one bag and one carry on.
We had a nice lunch in the airport as well. Borscht! I guess Lainey didn't get enough Ukrainian food during our stay. Thanks, but I prefer other delicacies.
Our airline was horrible. We had priority tickets which meant that we could board first, or so we thought. It really only meant "first on the bus" which is actually quite the opposite of priority. Everyone who came in after us was NOT priority yet they were crowding the bus doors only so that they'd be first off, therefore getting better seats on the plane. Oh yeah, no assigned seating. So combine the "no line" and "no assigned seats", imagine what a shit show that was. Lainey and Jonathan were at the front and refused to move away from the door. I know Lainey and she's very determined about certain things. This was definitely something worth fighting for. As soon as the doors opened for the bus, the people spewed out like vomit. Not an exaggeration. My group bolted, but me having the largest carryon, I was totally left for dead. The stairs leading up to the plane were swaying back and forth so crazily. Some man tried to push me off the bus, then tried to push past me onto the stairs, so I went NY on his ass, jamming my big ass bag in front of him and yelling "NO! I got pushed off the bus, you're not getting on the plane before me!" Lucky for me, my whole cast was safely buckled in their seats and had a seat saved for me. Brian and I "stacked" Ben with my travel Trixie when he fell asleep!
When we got to Barcelona airport, we still had to take a bus for over an hour. We were starving so we stopped into some kebab place, nothing special. And would you believe it?! I ordered Paella. I was totally afraid because I wanted to try it but was a little afraid of the place, but also of what it was.
But I totally ate it (Aaron would be proud) and even ate all the mussels. I think being around new people makes me want to try new things so they don't see me as too picky! Yeah me!
